Miniaturization in Medical Imaging

Micro-cameras for medical imaging open new perspectives for diagnostics and treatment. This talk presents an overview on the prospects of medical micro-cameras, the challenges associated with their development and manufacturing, their applications and an outlook on future innovations.

Why miniaturization?

Miniaturization is a key element of distinction for innovative medical devices. In medical imaging, the use of micro-camera systems increases patient safety by reducing invasiveness of procedures in diagnostics and treatment. Moreover, miniaturized imaging elements enhance the degrees of flexibility in the design of medical devices, thereby acting as key driver of innovation.

Challenges and technological approach

Despite the advantages, miniaturization imposes significant challenges to developers and manufacturers, including:

  • Robustness and impermeability to withstand the harsh environment of the human body
  • Suitability for repeated reprocessing
  • Dynamically controlled light supply
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Sourcing of high-quality micro-components
  • Assembly and testing of micro parts under mass-production conditions

The micro-imaging system by Brütsch Elektronik is a key technology brick that addresses these challenges. Complex products, such as video-laryngoscopes and cystoscopes, based on the micro-imaging technology, have been developed and successfully launched. Components are assembled in a specially developed setup for micro-positioning in the 1 µm range. The acquired images are displayed on monitors with optimized user interfaces for the particular application.

Outlook

Sophisticated micro-imaging systems enable high-resolution of hidden anatomic structures inside the body, as well as real-time visualization of the treatment field during complex surgical procedures, thereby increasing patient safety and improving treatment outcome.
